Truly magical to be on the harbour watching the light show from the tall ship Only thing we didn't like was the main food Maybe best to have an overview on how better to get food to customers on the ship. By the time we got to serving ourselves the food was cold The brownie was pleasant Staff were great I would recommend anyone to take to the trip on the tall ship at night ... It's just magical
This past weekend three friends and I took the early Tall Ships Vivid Dinner cruise departing at 5.30pm. I recommend the earlier cruise as it's just after the sunset cruise and the number of people is relatively low, giving plenty of space to move around the ship. The ship we were on was the Søren Larsen build in the 1940's, a traditional tall sail ship. The crew and the host were all super friendly, and the buffet meal (with vegetarian and chicken main options) though not special was pleasant enough. There was a free bar of wines, beer, soft drinks, cider, and mulled wine all included in the ticket price. The cruise went for 90 minutes which was just perfect for us. The lights on the Bridge and projections on the Opera House were spectacular and to see the city all lit up from the harbour made you truly appreciate what a beautiful city Sydney is even at night. Well worth taking.
I was on the Southern Swan - can't remember if there were other boats so I thought I'd clarify. Everything about this experience was fantastic: the view of the lights was gorgeous (especially if you go up into the crows nest, which costs a bit extra but is so worth it it isn't funny), the food was delicious (can't beat a good curry and some brownies), and the staff/tour guides were amazing - funny, kind and genuinely enjoying themselves; they really made the entire experience that much more special. The free alcohol was a nice touch, too. Shout out to the Captain, who was absolutely lovely, Jim, who was hilarious and made everyone feel at home, and the woman who tried to get me out of my harness after I climbed up to the crows nest - it might've taken a bit more effort than was expected to get the carabiner off, but that just means I was extra safe! (please don't feel bad about that it was really funny). Honestly, I couldn't think of a better way to view the lights of Vivid. If you're considering any kind of boat tour, ever, you should go with the Sydney Harbour Tall Ship tours. If you're not thinking of doing any kind of tour, ever, you should go with the Sydney Harbour Tall Ship tours - it really feels like your travelling with old friends. Never done a tour like it. Ten out of five stars.
The only way to see VIVID from the water! Our 2nd time with the Tall Ships and we will certainly go back. Fantastic crew...welcoming and we felt well looked after. Buffet food was enough...you could go back for seconds and the brownies were warm and gooey. The free bar was a nice touch too (as was the mulled wine). You only pass the Opera House once so make sure you get photos if that's your thing. Very quiet....no sails but a quiet engine which you don't really notice. Rugs provided to keep you warm if you want them too. All in all highly recommended.
Our departure point was changed due to the presence of a cruise ship at circular quay meaning our ship had to Que for a space at the wharf and putting us a bit behind schedule but this was a minor inconvenience. Our ship had an interesting history being hidden from the Germans during world war 2 and then having various identities shipping cargo and being used as a fishing vessel before becoming a tourist boat. The crew was young, friendly and enthusiastic. The beer was cold and the simple meal of a variety of salads and two types of curry (chicken and vegetarian both of which were delicious). Serenely motoring past the vast variety of lights and light shows was a relaxing way to see the best of the Vivid festival. Luckily the strong winds of the previous days had abated and the heavy rain and winds that came a couple of days later hadn't arrived. Being an open deck it would have been a bit unpleasant if it had been raining and blowing a gale. Our 90 minute cruise was closer to a two hour cruise, the skippers apology for departing a bit late. We all appreciated a bit extra time to savour the atmosphere.
